Net Carbs Explained

Nutrition and marketing information
Last updated: 16 October 2026

Customers regularly ask us, “How many net carbs?” We use this familiar wording to help explain the carbohydrate content of our food. This page explains how we use the term “net carbs” in our product information and marketing, and how to read it alongside each product’s UK nutrition declaration.

What “net carbs” means here

For our products without polyols, “net carbs” means the carbohydrate figure in the UK nutrition declaration, expressed for the same serving. For these products, we do not subtract fibre again, deduct sugars or make any additional deduction to produce the figures shown.

For example, a product without polyols that declares 2g carbohydrate per serving would also have 2g net carbs per serving under this explanation. The word “net” does not indicate a further reduction from that declared carbohydrate value.

Why fibre is not deducted again

Under UK nutrition labelling rules, carbohydrate and fibre are treated separately. The declared carbohydrate figure already excludes fibre. Polyols, where present, are included within declared carbohydrate. These definitions are set out in Annex I of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, as applicable in the relevant UK jurisdiction.

You should therefore not subtract the separately listed fibre from a UK carbohydrate figure. Doing so would count the exclusion twice and give an incorrect result.

A familiar term, with a specific meaning

“Net carbs” is not a separately defined nutrient in the statutory UK nutrition declaration. Its use elsewhere can vary, so we explain our meaning rather than assume every brand or nutrition calculator uses the same method.

Our use here is intended to communicate a carbohydrate quantity in language our customers recognise. It does not replace the full nutrition declaration or describe a separate category of carbohydrate.

Products containing polyols

Our range includes products with different ingredients and nutritional profiles. Do not assume that every product contains no polyols or that the same calculation applies across the range.

For products containing polyols, consult the individual product’s nutrition declaration, ingredients and any product-specific explanation of its net carbohydrate figure. This page does not establish a blanket deduction for polyols. Do not assume that a “net” figure permits a further subtraction, or that all polyols can automatically be disregarded. If the basis of a figure is unclear, please contact us before relying on it.

Serving sizes and individual needs

Compare figures for the same quantity of food. A value per serving or individual item is not a value per 100g. Nutrition values are average values, and portions and recipes can vary. Check the information on your product packaging and contact us if it differs from our website.

A carbohydrate quantity does not predict an individual's blood glucose response or guarantee suitability for a particular diet or medical condition. If you use carbohydrate information to manage diabetes, follow the advice of your healthcare team and use the product's declared nutrition information.

Our marketing approach

We aim to make nutritional quantities clear, accurate and consistent with the relevant product information. Nutrition and health claims are subject to separate rules, including the conditions attached to permitted claims. This explanation does not create an exemption from those rules or imply approval of our wording by a regulator.

This page explains our terminology; it does not restrict your statutory consumer rights.
